BlueSkies 63 Report
February 17, 2013

This was the first launch at the Sod Farm in Elizabethtown, KY. I got there a little before 9:00 but spent 15 minutes looking for the place. Once we got there and settled in it was setup and fly rockets on this beautifully suited landscape. There is a lot of open land with nothing but soft grass to land on. the few hazards are a pond, a few trees, a power line and a road. It was a good day to fly even though the wind was cold. The sun kept us warm along with the insulated underware. Dennis Stevens had the honor of flying the first rocket on our new site.

We had 7 fliers with 33 flights and 35 motors burned. The total impulse was 3627 N-sec. (Cesaroni L995RLP) .

    1. Patriot (C6-5)
    2. Mars Lander (B6-2) Nice Low flight. Easy recovery. No damage.
    3. Mars Lander (C6-3) Chute did not come out until model hit ground. Minimum Damage.
    4. Black Brant (D12-5) Nice flight. Good straight flight.
    5. Sky Spike (C6-3) Nice flight.
    6. Space Shuttle (C6-3) Flight almost horizonal after about 75 feet. Chute did not open until after landing
    7. Space Shuttle (C6-3) Good Flight. Shuttle separated from external tanks as it should. No damage.
    8. SAM 3 (B6-4) Don't remember this one. help Jeff.
    9. Little Joe II (A3-4T) Nice flight. Good straight flight. Scaffolding portion of Nose Cone came loose. Model landed on pavement with minimum damage. I recovered model from pavement while Jeff looked for the upper portion of the nose cone. I helped after recovery of model but neither could find it.
    10. Micron (A8-5) I did not see this launch. Jeff help.
    11. Patriot (C6-5)
    12. Mars Lander (B6-2) Nice Low flight. Easy recovery. No damage.

    1. Silver Streak (1/2A3-4T) Good flight. Launched model with small parachute to determine upper winds. Ejection charge was not powerful enought to eject the parachute and it tumbled to the ground. No Damage and not able to determine strength of upper winds.
    2. EX-299 (A10-3T) Nice Straight high flight. Streamer ejected at apogee and model was recovered without damage.
    3. Witchcraft (C6-3) Great flight. Wind caused the model to drift just short of the playground to the West of the launch site. Model recovered by Jeff deDoming's daughter. Thanks for the recovery help.
    4. Mongoose (C6-0/C6-7) Maiden flight of the model was perfect. Booster was recovered by Jeff Caldwell (Thanks Jeff for tracking and recovery) and the upper stage was recovered from the middle of the weed patch North of the launch site. Found about 8 golf balls during recovery.
    5. Cloud Warrior (B14-0/C6-7) Good flight straight up. The B14-0 was manufactured 7-2-70 and performed beautifully. The upper stage continued to apogee arched over and the ejection charge fired releasing the streamer. The upper stage was recovered a few feet shy for the field fence West of the launch site. Thanks again Jeff for recovering the booster. Noticed the aft end of the booster is starting to get soft from the exhaust gases. Model requires a miner fin repair due to breakage during motor removal.
    6. Mongoose (C6-0/C6-73x C6-3) Nice Straight high flight with great booster separation. Upper stage landed just South of the playground West of the launch site and the booster landed Northeast of the launch site just short of the Frisby basket. I recovered the upper stage and with Darryls instructions was able to recover the booster. No Damage.
    7. Silver Streak (A10-3T) Nice Flight with a recovery just slightly West of the launch site.

    1. Interceptor (C6-5) Good Flight
    2. No Name (E9-6) This model had a camera payload. Flight had a little spin and a good recovery. Jeff played back the video.
    3. Scratch Built (F40-7) Great Liftoff. Lots of noise and exhaust smoke.
    4. LOC IV (2 x E9-6 & 2 x D12-0) All engines ignited and was quite impressive. Nice Flight Jeff.

    1. Blue Angel (G106 SK) Great loud sparky lift-off. Just shortly after apogee the motor was ejected from the mount and caused the model to come in ballistic. Model buried itself into the hard clay pack. Darryl was able to dig out the upper body tube but the nose cone was broken off and remained buried. The tracker was recovered but not sure if it still worked.
    2. Sizzler (C6-7) A minimum diameter rocket which flew really high. Model was recovered.
